Mount Kilauea is Hawaii’s youngest volcano and is the world’s most active. Mount Kilauea lies 60 feet deep in the earth’s crust. There has been at least 62 eruptions in the past 32 years. That’s about 2 eruptions each year!! These continuous eruptions have caused its shield like form. Mount Kilauea is a shield volcano. Continuous eruptions have also formed a cinder-and-spatter cone called Puu Oo. Puu Oo mainly produces aa lava. Puu Oo has had 55 episodes in a 16 year period. Even though this volcano has so many eruptions…it hasn’t killed any people. But it has caused A LOT of damage. Mount Kilauea has destroyed 181 homes, many buildings, roads, trails, and many archeological sites have been buried. People have had to pay over $61 million dollars for these damages. Most people you’d think wouldn’t want to leave near an area like this. But some actually would like to live there. Some find it exciting and nice to live in such a historic place. Mount Kilauea may be very damaging but it has some benefits. This volcano has made Hawaii a great place for tourism. Mount Kilauea and all the other volcanoes in Hawaii have made the soil very rich. Mount Kilauea has made a great impact on Hawaii and it wouldn’t be the same if it wasn’t there today.
